Abstrakt
The article summaries questions and the methodological starting point of the issue of the history of town walls, especially their construction, concepts, function and impact on the life of the town community. The work addresses these aspects on the basis of the Prague towns, with an emphasis on the necessary comparative approach to the studied issue.
Emphasis is also placed on the cancellation pf the fortifications and the use of the free space in the urbanistic concept of modern town development.
