Abstract

Lídia Jorge's novel, O Vento Assaobiando nas Gruas, was published in 2002. It describes three generations of a poor Cape Verdean family, "Os Mata", in Portugal.

It also describes three generations of a Portuguese family, "Os Leandro", a family opposite to the first in all aspects - it is a rich, traditional, patriarchal, conservative and, above all, "white" family. An analysis of the behavior of the two marginalized protagonists, from various points of view, and the way they relate to their limited existential space, shows us an image of Portugal in transformation at the end of the 20th century.
