Literature concerning the subordinate causal clauses in Latin usually does not deal with the texts of law. The only exceptions are three mentions in Hofmann - Szan-tyr (1965, p. 586 and 628) and Kühner - Stegmann (II, 1955, p. 383).
The 50thbook of Iustinian's Digest has been chosen for the subsequent analysis of these claus-es with all conjunctions employed (quoniam, quia, quod, cum, and quando). The fre-quency, context of cause, verbal mood and correlative expressions are analysed in com-parison with the rules of Classical Latin and with the tendency of these conjunctions gene rally observed in texts of Late Latin.
A specific employment of cum causale after nega tive main clause is described and presented.
