Abstract
The house is one of the basic narrative spaces. However, in many Portuguese novels and short stories from the Renaissance to Modernism, it is filled with an unusual silence, reflecting the provinciality and pettiness of the country, the inability to communicate between generations or the decline and disintegration of whole society.
