Antiarrhythmic drug therapy is still essential in arrhythmia management. Antiarrhythmic drug therapy plays a significant role in the treatment of complex supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias and participates on hybrid therapy in combination with catheter ablation or in patients with implanted cardiac electronic devices.
The role of antiarrhythmics is reduced in case of simple supraventricular and idiopathic ventricular arrhythmias. Indication for pharmacological treatment is different according to rhythm disorder and individual profile of patient.
There is evidence of good antiarrhythmic effect of available drugs for arrhythmia treatment, but these drugs have no significant effect on mortality and all of them have some proarrhythmic effect.
