Abstract

The case study focusses on the system of the permanent defence of the Prague towns in the Middle Ages and Early Modern period. This defence mechanism created by Charles IV involved the resettlement of shooters (crossbow makers) into the Prague-New Town and Lesser Quarter towers.

The craftsmen lived in the towers, thus providing continual maintenance and protection for the Prague walls, and these individuals also had their production workshops in the towers. Wenceslaus IV gave shooters land in close proximity to the walls to build small houses and establish gardens.

As a result, development was created along the Prague wall, where full-fledged special "side" law took force in the 15th century. The study clarifies the legal status of individuals living in the New Town walls while also casting new light on the demise of this institution at the beginning of the 17th century.
