Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the level of territorial mobility and migration strategy of women in connection with the performance of their profession in the Živnostenská bank. Specifically, the paper focuses on women who started their employment with the Živnostenská bank until 1918.

The presented study is based primarily on the so-called registries of Živnostenská bank employees and personal files. Based on the analysis of data concerning the origin of the clerks, previous experience, as well as data on operations in the branches of Živnostenská bank, the study seeks to reveal the level and motives of these migration strategies.

At the same time, the study maps the process and degree of feminization in the banking sector in the first decades of the century. Territorial mobility and migration strategy of clerks is analyzed in two levels - so-called internal migration, which involves movements between banks' headquarters and branches, and so-called external migration, which involves migration strategy of clerks in terms of their stay or leaving a financial institution.

Proven analysis shows that the entry of women into the Živnostenská bank led to their further territorial mobility and the motives for these migrations were very strongly determined by social and economic considerations. The employment of women in Živnostenská bank at the time analyzed appears rather as a temporary substitute, in which the bank did not continue to such an extent during peacetime.
