Novel aircraft Mg-Y-Gd-Ca alloys with high ignition temperature and suppressed flammability

Publication at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics |

Abstract

The ban by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of application of magnesium in aircraft cabins was lifted under the condition that the used materials have to fulfill the requirements for the ignition tests. This work proposes the novel Mg-2Y-2Gd-1Ca alloy with a small amount of Y, Gd and Ca as main alloying elements.

Superior ignition temperature of 1100 degrees C was determined for this alloy. Analysis of the oxide layers revealed the presence of Y2O3, CaO, Gd2O3, and MgO in oxide layers which were observed to significantly suppress ignition compared to the pure Mg. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
