Abstract

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics to three scientists who have made significant contributions to the study of the universe. One of the leading living cosmologists, James Peebles, won half the award.

Since the early 1960s, he has been systematically and thoroughly studying the physical processes that take place in the early universe and during its subsequent evolution. In this way, he fundamentally influenced modern cosmology, which has now become a comprehensive and credible scientific discipline based on a logical system of theoretical models supported by very accurate observations.

Peebles is an expert mainly in the primordial formation of elements, relic microwave radiation and the formation of galactic structures. His scientific works, books and textbooks have inspired countless colleagues and students.
