Based on unique iconographical material (historical plans and pictures) and secondary sources the author presents rather detailed history of the Prague hospital system since the end of the 18th century up to the post-World War II period. He deals with the history of hospitals and other categories of inpatient health institutions (sanatoria, maternity hospitals, mental hospitals, among others).
The author focuses on three decisive periods of rapid developments of Prague hospital system: the Enlightened reforms in 1780s, developments around 1900, and successful interwar projects of the Greater Prague. He analyses the "Prague hospital problem" from many perspectives: history of public health system, health organization, history of medical sciences, history of architecture and urban planning, history of medical technologies, not speaking about changing social and political contexts (namely in the troubled 20th century).
