In spite of its title, the chapter concentrates on personal memory in the Middle Ages, especially with respect to identity formation. Both voluntary recollection (especially casuistry, confession, and meditation) and involuntary memory (love and intrusive thoughts) are discussed.

Special attention is paid to "memory of the future" - having the approaching death always on one's mind, as well as to applying the concept of nostalgia aon the Middle Ages.
