The paper deals with the implementation, the data collection and the results of case studies. The case studies deal with the teachers' attitudes towards teaching science topics and their influence on the ability to create conditions for the development of students' ability to solve science-oriented problem tasks.
The overarching concept is concept of scientific literacy and support for its development among students. Data for writing case studies were collected by questionnaire surveys, evaluation of a set of problematic science-oriented tasks solved by students and records analysis of science teaching observations.
The attitude questionnaire for teachers was taken over, standardized and validated for Czech conditions. Pupils' attitudes towards school, science topics and their teaching were mapped.
The items for this tool were taken from the materials of the international TIMSS survey as well as the individual problem science tasks. One of the examined relationships is teacher's perception of one's own ability to teach science topics and students' success in solving problem science tasks.
