Deep infiltrating endometriosis affecting the gastrointestinal tract

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2020

Abstract

Endometriosis affecting the gastrointestinal tract is the most common extragenital endometriosis and occurs in approximately 5-15%. The most common symptoms are dyschezia, constipation, tenesmus and acyclic pain.

The diagnosis is based on a history, vaginal and rectal examination but mainly on ultrasound imaging, possibly supplemented by NMR. The solution may be a pharmacotherapy or surgical approach that can be divided into shaving, discoid excision or segmental resection.

Of course, this type of operation requires a multidisciplinary approach.
