Abstract

There exist many methods for solving interaction in continuum mechanics. However, the suitable method for each particular problem needs to be chosen individually.

We aim to obtain a robust, efficient solver suitable for large deformations and based on the ALE (Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian) method. In our case, we will compute fluid-structure interaction with in-compressible fluid and compressible solid structure.

The standard ALE method is computed in the reference configuration, so there is no need to rebuild the mesh even if the materials are moving. However, in case of large deformation, this can cause significant violation of the mesh projection to the current configuration and the following numerical instability.

Thus, we consider the third configuration, where we realize the computations. We will reconstruct this configuration after several time steps.

If the mesh projection is damaged, we set the new configuration as the projection of the previous one. This configuration will be fixed until the next reconstruction.
