Stalin, Europe, and the cold war: new histories

Publication

Abstract

Review of Timothy Snyder, Ray Brandon Ray (eds.): Stalin a Evropa: Napodobit a ovládnout, 1928-1953 (Praha: Edice Moderní dějiny, 2019) a Norman M. Naimark: Stalin and the fate of Europe: the post-war struggle for sovereignty (Cambridge - London: The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 2019).

Review text of two publications dealing with Soviet policies on parts of the Europe before and after World War II. Both works, or rather some texts of the first publication subscribe to a revised view of Soviet activity in Eastern, Central (in the case of the first) and Western Europe (in the case of the second book).

Both diagnose the flexibility of Soviet policy in relation to the continent and its various parts during the Cold War and emphasize the role of local actors.
