Abstract

The Balkan Peninsula represents the major biodiversity hotspot in the Mediterranean Basin. The genus Cardamine (Brassicaceae) comprises several endemic taxa constrained to this area.

While most of them are diploid, this study focuses on the only tetraploid representative, C. barbaraeoides, endemic to the Southern Pindos Mountains in Greece. Hyb-Seq method, combining target enrichment and genome skimming, was used to obtain sequences of more than 1000 low-copy nuclear genes and chloroplast DNA from the sampled taxa.

These were used for the phylogenetic reconstruction of the Balkan Cardamine, to resolve the allopolyploid origin of C. barbaraeoides and also to estimate the most likely progenitors of this stenoendemic species.
