Abstract

The Aesthetics on the Periphery and in the Center of Arthur C. Danto's Thought. - In this paper, I will approach the question of the center and periphery from the perspective of Arthur C.

Danto's attitude towards philosophy of art and aesthetics. Not only is my aim to demonstrate that aesthetics has got from the periphery of Danto's philosophical interest to its center but also that it had always been part of his analysis of art.

In the first part of my paper, I shall consider Danto's opinions on the aesthetic attitude theories, the second part is devoted to his definition of art. The third section of my paper deals with the notion of inflection introduced in Danto's book The Abuse of Beauty.

In the final section, I will take account of Danto's additionally formulated condition of "wakeful dreams", and his thoughts on the rhetoric dimension of art sketched in his Transfiguration of the Commonplace. I believe these thoughts prefigured the idea of inflection and that it is possible to consider them as proof of the aesthetic dimension of Danto's philosophy of art.
