Place name adaptation. Typological considerations

Abstract

This presentation examines the terminological and typological handling of so-called place-name borrowings and their adaptation within the Scandinavian research tradition. These are critically assessed and both revisions and additions to the relevant typological categories are suggested.

It is proposed that with respect to borrowing a typology should seek to categorize and describe the individual processes involved, not the resulting output, which, as shown, may exhibit a multitude of different adaptation strategies. In this way, the typical method of classifying the end result of borrowing (eg. as a loanword, as a loan translation) is challenged.
