The end is nigh: lexical replacement of transitive adjectives in the Middle English period

Abstract

This paper traces lexical replacement in the semantic field of adjectives of proximity and distance. Between the Old English and the Middle English (ME) period, most of the OE transitive adjectives were gradually replaced by the incoming French loan adjectives as well as newly formed domestic adjectives.
