Abstract
School geography is undergoing long-term development from "delivering encyclopaedic knowledge" to the systematic development of students' geographical thinking. Maps can be a powerful tool for such development.
The article presents the educational potential of maps, types of map skills, and ways of structuring map tasks to develop geographical thinking.
