The popularity of vegetarianism in its various forms has been growing in recent years, as has its, often uncritical, publicity in the media. Observational studies show lower risk factors for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, lower risk of cancer and ischemic heart disease, and death from ischemic heart disease in vegetarians compared to nonvegetarians.
However, vegetarianism may be associated with a higher incidence of bone fractures, mental health and, especially veganism, may lead to manifestations of specific deficiencies of some nutrients. The exclusion of animal foods from the diet does not in itself ensure its good quality.
To ensure the nutritional adequacy of the plant diet, consumers need to know about the appropriate composition of the diet and should consult with experts.
