Exploring binomials across different text types

Abstract

The goal of this paper is to present how binomials can be explored using data from language corpora. Using structural queries, it is possible to search for the same structures in different types of corpora in order to determine possible differences in their usage.

Two binomial structures were selected in order to test the comparison of binomial occurrences across individual text types: coordination of nouns after a preposition, and reduplication of imperatives with a nested component. These structures were then retrieved from texts ranging from fiction to professional literature, journalism, web genres and spontaneous spoken language, and the results were compared.
