Abstract

In 2021, the whole Lusophone world commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Carlos de Oliveira (1921-1981), a Portuguese poet and novelist. He began as a neorealist, but worked his way up to a very distinctive expression with an introspective description of the gloomy moods and dark corners of the human mind.

We know him mainly thanks to the novel The Bee in the Rain (Uma abelha na chuva, 1953). Three lectures will be given as part of an evening co-organized by the Society of Czech Portuguese and the Portuguese Cultural Institute as part of the Poetry Day festival.

Verses by Carlos de Oliveira in the Portuguese original and a Czech translation by Vlasta Dufková, who will also talk about his condensed poetics. Zuzana Rákociová from FF MUNI will attend the reception of his work in the Czech Republic and Portugal.

In the evening, Karolina Válová from the Faculty of Arts, Charles University will present and introduce the author's biography and talk about the Gándara area as the main topic of the author's work.
