Obesity and unhealthy lifestyle are supposed to be a potential cause for type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) which affects over 900, 000 Czech people and poses a serious health policy problem. The rate of obesity in the Czech Republic is 20% while the average EU rate amounts to 15%.
As the costs of DM2 treatment take up to 15% of the public health insurance per year, a solution emerges in increasing participation in health care. In order to mitigate the problem of obesity and the risk of DM2 on one hand and relieve healthcare and social public budgets on the other, the paper provides analysis on several policy alternatives, concluding that nudging strategies are strongly recommended over the others.
