Abstract

The paper contemplates the status of the university just before the outbreak of the Hussite uprising. In September 1415 an assembly of Hussite noblemen assigned the role of an appellate authority for unfair episcopal courts of justice to the university.

The university had given expert opinions to top government representatives, both secular and religious, and suddenly the university was to take over the role that would substitute the poorly operating religious institutions. The paper points out situations when it fulfilled the task assigned to it.

In consequence of that the university was suspended (1417) and had to operate outside the official framework. Therefore, we have to ask who was the "Prague university" in 1419 was and how did its members participate in the revolution which they had prepared by their intellectual activities.
