The paper reflects on the position and role of word-formation in the teaching of Czech in primary school. The introduction briefly recalls selected concepts, namely that of word-formation as a discipline and its relationship to other linguistic disciplines.
The main part of the paper is practically focused, and it offers teachers some starting points of word-formation teaching, commenting and illustrating its objectives, content and possibilities of motivation and methodological approaches. It explicitly recommends, e. g. to include pragmatic, emotional, stylistic aspects of derived words, or to supplement multi-word naming units.
In addition to practicing the analysis of already existed words, it is advisable to focus on producing new words and to take into account their communication aspects. These ideas and approaches are illustrated by examples from contemporary communication, including the most recently created words.
