Grammaticalization: modality independent vs. modality specific aspects

Publication at Faculty of Education |

Abstract

We solve different concepts of grammarization: (A) participation of the gestural means on the verbal vocal expression, (B) substitution for verbal vocal expression vs. (C) for spoken languages as well as for sign languages as a process during which a lexical unit acquires grammatical functions. We emphasize the need for greater cooperation between gesture studies and sign language linguistics, as opposed to the view that A) each modality is grammatically different and that B) the modality from which the gestures are to be grammatically derived must be taken into account.
