French in the Czech Republic: assessment and perspectives

Abstract

The aim of the conference was to create an overview of the current state of teaching and research in universities in the Czech Republic in the fields of French linguistics, literature, didactics and translation studies, and, thanks to the involvement of other actors (the Ministry of Education, Intitut français de Prague,NIDV, the Embassy of the French Republic in the Czech Republic, teachers of French at primary and secondary schools and university students), to identify the possibilities of supporting the teaching of French in the Czech Republic and thus the possibilities of developing plurilingualism. The conference was held in French, in a hybrid format, and was attended by a total of about 80 participants (of which about 35 with active contributions). The conference was divided into four sessions:

1. presentation of study programmes with French in the Czech Republic, including a discussion on the form and possibilities of improving new study programmes aimed at preparing future teachers of French,

2. current research programmes in French departments, including a discussion on the use of large European projects for restructuring university departments,

3. New trends in the didactics of French, including a reflection on the effective integration of new technologies in language teaching even in the post-covid era,

4. discussion groups in a World Café format, focusing on issues of student motivation to learn French, the impact of the covid pandemic on teaching of French and on language teaching in general, and the possibilities of collaboration between universities and primary and secondary schools. The conference was sponsored by Gallica, association of university teachers of French in the Czech Republic.
