Abstract
The article deals with the relationship between landscape and railways. Landscape, with its changing demands, has driven man to incredibly inventive solutions.
Many of these constructions that had to be built to "cope" with the terrain have entered the history of railway construction and have also become the subject of the UNESCO protection. The paper shows original engineering approaches to cope with the difficult high-mountain environment and especially permafrost conditions.
