Agfacolor: The new colour film stock and its challenges for the Czechoslovak film industry in the post-war period

Abstract

The introduction of color film in postwar Czechoslovakia is inseparably linked to the East German film stock Agfacolor. On the one hand, Agfacolor brought the benefits of a color film stock that allowed all colors to be recorded on a single film strip.

At the same time, however, it brought new challenges to creative and technical staff that related to Agfacolor’s specific color reproduction and, above all, the technical limits of the film stock. Based on interviews, archival research, and analysis of film materials preserved in Národní filmový archiv, Prague, my presentation will reconstruct how certain creative approaches and technical processes emerged, in postwar Czechoslovakia, in response to Agfacolor film stock.
