The book discusses the social and individual conditionality of media competence and media performance. The focus is on the question of how the media activity of individuals can be explained and assessed with regard to their media competence, in the sense of safe and self-determined action in dealing with the media.
This requires a consideration of media activity against the background of the relationships between the competence to act, as the sum of abilities, skills and knowledge as well as the cognitive mastery of rules of behaviour (moral rules, legal rules and rules of prudence), and performance, as actual action of an individual.
