Map of ecological requirements of new plantings of woody plants

Publication

Abstract

The map facilitates selection of taxa for new tree plantings with regard to their ecological requirements and prospects for their adaptation in a particular area in future with regard to climate scenarios. Its primary purpose is to complement services available for nature conservation authorities that can be utilized specifically in the process of permitting tree felling and recommendation of compensatory measures (new plantings).

The map consists of several layers: (a) Map of tree growth success in extremity zones for the baseline (1981-2010) and 3 future time periods (2021-2040; 2041-2060; 2081-2100). b) Synthetic map of accompanying factors for selecting taxa recommended for planting The map is based on categorizing the growth conditions (normal, challenging or extreme) in relation to the abiotic factors at the particular site, and for compensatory plantings it allows NCA to select species that will thrive at the site. If properly applied by the target users, the map ensures the effectiveness and economic efficiency of compensating ecological damage by planting trees (according to the provisions of the Nature and Landscape Protection Act), as well as the effectiveness and economic efficiency of adaptation measures - planting trees directly mentioned in the Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change in the Czech Republic.
