Within the last few years, there has been renewed interest in the topic of media skills and so-called digital skills. In addition to research in communication science, media competence is also dealt with in other disciplines such as computer science or educational science.
The focus is often on measuring different areas of competence, which is presented in the following article using various examples. In addition to different efforts to measure competence, the topic of media competence is also discussed in audience research and media socialization research on the basis of different ways of dealing with media.
Here, however, the focus is more on an action-theoretical perspective. This article also argues from this point of view and asks what is actually measured with regard to media competence.
In addition, using the example of Bourdieu's sociology of education, it is shown what contribution an action-theoretical perspective can make to the assessment of media action.
