In his article, Stanislav Holubec deals with many of the current criticisms against the welfare state as they are presented today. He distinguishes between a soft and hard critique.
The hard critique says that the Welfare State has never worked and its demise will only eliminate the ills of our current society. The soft critique says that the welfare state was efficient in the past however today due to issues such as: globalization, aging of the society, and expansion of the tertiary sector, it is unsustainable.
Through his discourse on social mobility, social cohesion, criminal and employment policy, Stanislav Holubec debates many of the common criticisms of the Welfare State and illustrates many ways in which it can still be efficient. In his conclusion, Holubec deals with some new left alternatives to the welfare state and the projects.
