The international authority in Kosovo - the road to independence

Publication

Abstract

Kosovo is a political entintity in between the authonomy and independence. The bloody conflict in late 90th resulted in the establishment of an international protectorate in the province.

The international administration of Kosovo under the leadership of United Nations has governed Kosovo already from mid 1999 and during the recent years has been slowly passing its competence to the kosovar selfadministration. This process is leading to a de facto independence of the province, however still under the formal souvereignity of Serbia and Montenegro.

This process is supplemented by negotiations of Kosovo final status, which are under the control of Contact group states (UK, USA, France, Italy, Russia and Germany) and they are likely to lead to a conditional independence of Kosovo.
