Abstract
The article is devoted to the role of French as a space in which self-awareness can be born in Arabic-speaking countries. The language imposed on the conquered territories by the colonizer thus becomes a tool enabling reflection on oneself and its capture in a literary text.
The issue is demonstrated in the cases of several Algerian writers of different generations with different attitudes towards the French language.
