If we want to strive for at least a partial involvement of literary education, i.e. formative-creative interpretive work with a Latin text or translation, in the current conditions of Latin teaching in secondary schools, the question of choosing a suitable original or translation text is crucial. Firstly, in the case of historical and philosophical prose, and generally longer texts, the whole work is not selected, and secondly, the teacher must strive to ensure that the selection meets the pupils' preferences and expectations, at least to some extent. The criterion of difficulty is also important; a text that is too difficult significantly reduces motivation.
The lecture therefore looked at these criteria and attempted to provide some suggestions for appropriate readings in both prose and poetry.
