Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2014

Abstract

The book is devoted to the milieu of the sovereign court and courtly culture at the time of the reign of the Přemyslid dynasty. The main interpretive line is divided into five sections (Reality, ideals and fiction; People at the court; Care for the family and court; Celebrations and The court in space) and focuses mainly on the period of the reign of the Přemyslid dynasty, i.e. the period from the 10th century to 1306 The individual chapters therefore complement the thematic windows, which for instance deal with the problem of the testimony of the medieval sources, the period views of marriage, the nobility, old age or homosexuality.

It also offers discussions on the hunt, games, the meaning of colours or book production and mural paintings etc. The thematic windows follow the given phenomena in a wider temporal (reflecting the entire medieval period with some overlaps into the Modern Period) and geographical horizon.

An important part of the book became the translations of the medieval literature, which at the end of each chapter complete the interpretation contained in the main text and thematic windows. The main part of the translations of the chroniclers' records, court orders, deeds and literary production in the form of lyrical verses or parts of epic stories was prepared for the purposes of this book and are published for the first time ever in the Czech language in this book.
