Abstract
What was the life story of the writer who let it be heard that he would prefer to erase the word "hope" from dictionaries? The Portuguese Nobel laureate José Saramago has so far been neglected in the Czech Republic - apparently also because he was an active member of the Communist Party. But he left a multi-layered work with a unique style.
José Saramago would have lived to be one hundred years old on November 16, 2022. On that day, his name will probably appear in all the newspapers of the Lusophone world, which still extends over four continents.
Saramago is the only Nobel Prize laureate for literature writing in Portuguese.
