The publication deals with a topic in the field of linguistics so far neglected, namely the acquisition of language and communication in a child with Down syndrome (DS). Based on a two-year video recording of the early communication behavior of a boy with this diagnosis (from the age of 24 months to the age of 48 months) and available research on the acquisition of language in children with both typical and atypical development, it describes specifics in the building of language and communication competences of children with DS.
A unique part of the publication is also a research on the bilingual situation of a boy with DS growing up in a Czech-German language environment. The final section is devoted to proven methods for the development of communication and understanding.
The monograph also has a strong ethical overlap.
