Abstract

The exhibition The Magic of Discovery: From Hieroglyphs to Tutankhamun commemorated two significant anniversaries that Egyptology celebrated in 2022. In 1822, Jean François Champollion came up with a way to read ancient hieroglyphs and thus effectively founded the modern discipline of Egyptology.

One hundred years later, in November 1922, after years of tireless work, luck smiled on Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb of the then almost unknown king Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. Today, his name is known to people all over the world, together with the many wonderful treasures that were stored in his tomb.

The exhibition guided visitors through the paths taken by these two personalities in their desire to make a fundamental discovery for world scholarship, and at the same time brought the discoveries themselves closer. Everyone was thus able to get to know how the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing system works, what other types of writing the Egyptians used, or how their language and its grammatical structure changed with time.

The second part of the exhibition literally drew visitors into Tutankhamun's tomb and presented not only the story of its discovery, but also the many years of continuous work that followed, or new scientific findings related to this ruler.
