Abstract

Literature, both fictional and scholarly, reflects the peasant woman's childcare and diet, acknowledges her role in running the economy, but leaves aside her spiritual life, her place in national society, and many other aspects. The presentation and visualization of the Czech female peasant world should systematically show what was natural for her in her time and unthinkable today, clarify the limits and boundaries of the social space that was reserved for peasant women and their daughters, and explain that the conservative rural tradition has long restricted women in their social and cultural roles as well as in their basic economic roles.

The peasant woman is now a social category of the past and therefore also unknown. Exploring her life in the recent past contributes to understanding women's emancipation, the economic and social modernisation of the countryside and recalls a number of cultural and craft traditions that are slowly fading into oblivion.
