Abstract

The aim of the methodological study is to describe qualities of the questionnaire on the organizational climate of schools (OCDQ-RS; Hoy, Tarter & Kottkamp, 1991) on the sample of the population of Arabic schools in Israel. This questionnaire is considerably used in the Czech Republic as well (Urbánek et al. 2020).

Although we often work with a mere translation of the items of the questionnaire into other national languages, the question is to what extent the measured factors of teaching staff climate in it are inter-culturally transferable. The data for the analyses were gathered from 820 teachers from 30 Arabic schools in Israel using stratified random sampling in the period from April 2019 through May 2021.

The data were used to calculate the item analysis and a characteristic index of teaching staff climate suitable for the given population was proposed. Indices concerning the management support, teachers' engagement and friendly relations in the teaching staff have comparable internal consistency and correlational relationships as were found in the USA and the Czech Republic.

The index of teachers' frustration lacks acceptable internal consistency and the directivity index shows different correlational relationships with other indices when compared to the USA and the Czech Republic. Arab teachers in Israel regard the directive attitude of the principal as positive and supportive, thus strengthening good teaching staff climate.
