Motivational anchors

Abstract

In our motivational series, we look at individual motivators and motivational types, which are always either relationship, cause or growth focused. But what is the source of the aforementioned focuses and why is some people more relational and others more growth? The answer can be found in the so-called career anchors of Edgar Schein, whose theories are also the basis of the motivational map method (Sale, 2016).

An anchor is something that usually evokes the idea of a fixed point that holds us somewhere or to something. Motivational anchors therefore hold us imaginatively to the activities and work we do, and if they are not there, we need to anchor ourselves in other waters.
