Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612) was intensely interested in many areas of natural science, of which alchemy and astronomy were particularly prominent. He encouraged alchemical research in a number of its directions, most notably the search for new techniques in metallurgy and the development of contemporary medical alchemy following Paracelsus.
For Rudolf II, his natural science interests were closely combined with his love of art and collecting, resulting in the creation of vast collections of works of art and rare objects in his famous Kunstkammer. Alchemical and symbolic depictions from the collections of Rudolf II still inspire observers today.
The thematic workshop reflected the phenomenon of alchemy from historical, philosophical, art historical and natural scientific points of view. Leading experts from Charles University and the University of Vienna, who have been working on the topic for decades, presented the results of their research.
