Abstract

This study focuses on Czech university students and the patterns regarding their consumption of sugar and sweet products during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic (winter 2020/2021). We investigated various relationships between sugar, other sweeteners, and the students' after-consumption feelings, sweetening practices, and education about sugar.

The research sample constituted 579 students (aged 18-29) from Czech universities across the country. Our findings have shown that the consumption of sugar in hot drinks decreased during the pandemic by 30% compared to the studies and results from 2019.

As for sugar-sweetened drinks and flavored beer, their consumption was higher - in this age group - than in the younger generation (11-15 years). The amount of soft drinks consumed by the students was mainly influenced by the father's education and other factors.

In addition, the association of consumption of sweet products with positive social and psychological states also contributed to the consumption of most of the young respondents surveyed.
