"The Fight for Prague in Madrid": The Spanish Civil War and Czech Cultural Memory

Abstract

The Spanish Civil War has a permanent place in Czech historical memory, figuring in historical literature, history teaching, and annual conferences. This interest does not stem so much from the desire by Czechs to understand ((what actually happened}} in Spain.

Rather, the constant interest in this foreign war is closely linked to the construction of the Czechs' image of themselves, of their values, of their ((national character}}, and of their country's place in Europe. My aim is to answer the following questions: What motivates the desire of the Czechs to learn about and discuss the Spanish Civil War? How has the image of this war change over the time? What is the meaning of this war for the Czechs and what kind of arguments do they use to defend one or another's interpretation of it?
