According to Edward Said, negative representations of Muhammad in Western Europe were used as proof of the doctrinal fraud of Islam. In this sense, these representations are central in the representational system of Islam as another, and, therefore, in the construction of their own identity and in the legitimization of the domain over the disputed territory.
Taking into account the sources of the period studied, not only the representations of Muhammad played this role, but in that same sense Ishmael and Satan were part of this, who were associated with Islam, and hence three of them were vital and functioned under the same logic.
