Abstract

The review of Malgorzata Fidelis' book puts Poland as a Second World country on the map of the global sixties the study of which has so far been almost exclusively focused on the Third World. The book also rehabilitates the West as a valuable cultural role model in the Cold War era.

Consumerism loses its pejorative connotations and transforms into a vehicle of modernity and emancipation. Lastly, Fidelis proves that getting a grasp of old yearnings can provide answers to numerous questions societies ask about themselves today.
