Abstract

As of 16th September 2022, the Russian Federation ceased to be a state party to the European Convention on Human Rights. The European Court of Human Rights has thus definitively lost its jurisdiction to deal with cases of human rights violations in the Russian Federation.

This happened as a direct consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia announced its intention to end its membership in the Council of Europe at the end of February 2022.

In March 2022, the country was officially expelled. Thus began a six-month transition period that resulted in the definitive end of Russia's membership in the Organization in September 2022.
